Inclusive design isn't a compliance layer we add at the end — it's the brief we start from. Before a line is drawn, we ask how the space performs for a visitor using a wheelchair, a neurodiverse child, an older parent, a person with low vision, in Gulf heat and glare, all at once.

We use this framework, drawn from our inclusive playground work, to test every scheme: does the space exclude, segregate, integrate, or truly include?

Exclusion

People with disabilities are left out of the playground entirely.

Segregation

A separate playground or zone is built just for people with disabilities.

Integration

Everyone shares one site, but people with disabilities stay in a defined sub-space within it.

Six ways we test a design.

Every scheme is checked against physical, sensory, communicative, and cognitive access — not just the requirements a code happens to name.

Physical disability

Impairments ranging from limited mobility or dexterity to full paralysis — designed for with clear, generous, step-free routes.

Visual disability

Impaired vision, colour blindness, or total blindness — addressed with tactile wayfinding, contrast, and non-visual cues.

Hearing disability

Partial or total loss of hearing — supported with visual alerting, signage, and acoustic-aware landscape design.

Speech disability

Speech impairments including stuttering and voice disorders — supported by symbol- and image-based wayfinding and communication aids.

Autism spectrum

A spectrum of developmental conditions affecting social communication and sensory processing — supported with calm zones and sensory-graded play.

Cognitive disability

Conditions including Down syndrome, dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, cerebral palsy, and traumatic brain injury — designed for with simple, predictable, low-stimulus layouts.

Executive Director, Architecture

An architect and creative director who has made inclusive design a standard, not a specialism, across a portfolio spanning arts and culture, urban development, commercial, residential, resorts, healthcare, education, and industrial work. Leads multi-disciplinary teams across time zones on large international projects, and is the practice's primary point of contact for clients.

Greg Marinelli

Design Director, Landscape, Urban Planning & Master Planning

A landscape architect and urban designer with 21 years of experience across MENA, North America, and China, spanning client representation, design leadership, and construction supervision. Leads bid's inclusive play practice, working closely with UAE municipalities on community master planning and specialising in sensory-considered, neurodiverse-friendly playgrounds, public realm, parks, and resorts.
